The Down-Side

A look at the negatives of using Accelerated Reader and other computer-based incentive programs

Some factors to consider....

  • Reading becomes devalued when it is used as a means to a reward rather than a reward in itself.
  • Tangible rewards eventually lead to decreased motivation.
  • Title selection tends to be heavily weighted toward fiction, thereby limiting students’ exposure to other genre.
  • Both materials selection and collection development start to be controlled by a for-profit company rather than reliable recommendation sources. The list of titles may not even support your school’s curriculum goals.
  • Students fail to develop independent book selection skills.
  • Personal responses (aesthetic reading) are discouraged when readers read to pass factual multiple-choice tests.
  • Investment in reading incentive programs may not lead to efficient use of monetary and personnel resources for sound educational improvements. (Carter, 1996)
